CDE Briefing: The Military Challenge for Science and Technology

Thursday, 08 September 2011 from 09:00AM to 05:00PM

Venue: Cardiff University

Background

The Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE) in conjunction with the Welsh Government and Cardiff University is holding a seminar open to all potential suppliers of new ideas and research.

This seminar is split with a morning session looking, in general, at the opportunities for new science and technology to impact on military capability and an afternoon session presenting two current calls for research proposals. The programme covers:

The Military Challenge for Science and Technology

Senior Military Advisers (Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and British Army) to the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (dstl) will provide a broad military perspective to the future challenges behind the science and technology research programme.

ISTAR Concepts and Solutions Tranche 1

Dstl is running an ISTAR research programme with regular demonstrations starting in February 2012. This programme also includes a number of CDE calls, with ‘Novel Integrated ISTAR' being the first; it will be focussed on Layered ISTAR providing an opportunity for demonstrating in February 2012. [Call closes 1200 noon on 27th September 2011.

Dismounted Urban Sensing and Targeting (DUST)

Future conflicts beyond 2020 are expected to occur in increasingly complex urban environments. This CDE call is for research proposals to develop mobile, day/night, all weather sensor, processing and communication technologies that can enable urban operations in a truly three dimensional physical environment; in particular to support dismounted close combat at the company level and below. [Call Closes 1200 noon 18th October 2011.]
