EPSRC Research Institute in the Science of Cyber Security Workshop

Wednesday, 14 December 2011 at 02:00PM to Thursday, 15 December 2011 at 04:00PM

Venue: EPSRC, Polaris House, North Star Avenue, Swindon, SN2 1E

Background

Currently, there is no recognised foundational science underpinning Cyber Security.  In the past few years this subject has started to receive increased attention as a result of both its inherent scientific merits and its potential to help us to improve our ability to respond effectively to cyber
threat.

This Call is inviting applications from researchers at UK Higher Education Institutions to participate in a workshop which will help formulate a Call for Full Proposals for a Research Institute in the Science of Cyber Security.

The workshop will bring together academics and stakeholders who have an interest in the Science of Cyber Security in order to discuss research challenges prior to the issue of the Call for Full Proposals in or about January 2012.

Please note that only workshop attendees will be eligible to be Principal Investigators on Proposals submitted in response to the subsequent Call for Full Proposals.

It is currently envisaged that the Research Institute will be multidisciplinary in nature, drawing on subject areas such as computer science, economics and behavioural sciences.

Programme

It is anticipated that work in one or more of the following broad Research Themes will be undertaken (no significance should be attached to the order):

  • Cyber Behaviour
  • Cyber Economics
  • Cyber Risk
  • Measuring Security

The purpose of the workshop is to further develop and refine these Research Themes such that the Themes could be incorporated by GCHQ and EPSRC into the subsequent Call for Full Proposals.

The focus of the Research Institute will be on carrying out high-quality, public-domain research which advances knowledge in research areas identified as having the greatest potential for transformative change in current academic and user practice. In addition, it is anticipated that the Research Institute will provide a focus for liaison with stakeholders from GCHQ and other parts of government and busines.

It is anticipated that a Research Institute will be appointed following assessment and evaluation of Proposals submitted in response to the Call for Full Proposals.

The Research Institute would be funded by the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) in Cheltenham, with an indicative budget of £2M over 3.5 years, through an EPSRC research grant.

Booking

Applicants for attendance at the workshop must be eligible to be Principal Investigators on EPSRC grants.

Any eligible individual who would like to attend the workshop must complete and submit an application form by 16:00 on Wednesday 9 November 2011

Full details of this call and the application procedure to attend the workshop are available at: www.epsrc.ac.uk/funding/calls/open/Pages/cybersecurityresearchinstitute.aspx
