Venue: 1 Victoria Street, London
Background
Everyone wants to know where you are, where you've been and where you're going. Your location has never been in higher demand. Organisations have become considerably more sophisticated at obtaining this data and using it to model you, your habits and your decisions. As a result, location information has become a true cornerstone of valuable data for both individuals and organisations. The big question is, is this a bad thing?
One side of the argument is to say that location data is private unless actively surrendered for
specific uses, and that much of the location data gathered today is not on the basis of individual
consent for each instance of data capture. Others suggest that location data has a positive impact if used correctly and that often the law dictates that it must be gathered and held regardless of popular opinion.
Fundamentally there is a trade off between benefit and risk. So where does the right balance lie?
The latest iteration of the successful series of A Fine Balance events attempts to identify this and address some of the most pressing questions at the forefront of the debate around location-based privacy:
Our aim this year is to define a clear way forward that can be supported by all parties associated with the explosion of location based services.
