HOSBD 2010

The annual HOSDB security equipment exhibition will take place from the 16th - 18th March 2010. The 2010 event will take place at Farnborough and be significantly bigger than in previous years, with space for exhibitors being increased by over 50%.

UKTI DSO are sponsoring a substantial increase in the number of official delegations of senior police and security representatives from around the world to this event, so this is a first class opportunity for organisations to demonstrate their technology to important organisations from around the globe.

The usual fees for exhibitors to this event are

                         4 square metre booth £1630

                         6 square metre booth £2075

                         8 square metre booth £2460

                        12 square meter booth £2800

All these prices are subject to VAT.

There is an opportunity for SITC members to enter into arrangements with other members to share a booth(s) in order to reduce the cost of exhibiting i.e. two members sharing a 4 square metre booth - cost to each £815. Three members sharing a 12 square metre booth - cost to each £934.

Each company will still get a separate entry in the catalogue. If there is some synergy between the firms sharing the booth, so much the better.

If necessary, SITC can co-ordinate between members who wish to take advantage of this offer so that suitable sharing arrangements can be arranged.

BCS Technical Discussion Forum - 'Are Safety & Security Critical Software One and the Same

Venue: tba

Background:

There has been a blurring of the difference between safety and security critical systems as both have become increasingly software intensive. The fault on an aircraft's flight control function could lead to a catastrophic failure, resulting in the loss of human life; hence a safety-critical system is required. A fault with a cryptographic function could lead to a breach of security or financial loss and hence a security-critical system is required. However in these times, such a breach in security can result in a successful terrorist attack, which can also lead to loss of human life. This security-critical system would also need to be a safety-critical system.

These two systems require strong partitioning to prevent unintended interactions. Software functions of varying levels of criticality are often hosted together (e.g. on the same module) and interference, interdependencies and compound effects must be considered and prevented.

Does partitioning using formal methods require enforcing and proving?

Is it necessary or indeed possible to interchange these types of systems. Sometimes, never, partially?

Are the technical differences between the systems too great to support this?

Clarity and new understanding is required in this area particularly in the light of the reasons for the Nimrod disaster recently released.

Booking:

The BCS Security Strategic Panel, invites SITC Members with interests in these areas to attend the above discussion forum.

The closing date for replies is Monday 26 April 2010

For further details and invitation please contact: bee.clayton@hq.bcs.org.uk
